BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS

jade_roomTraditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) approaches tend to be top-down approaches in which business decide what social issues they choose to address, focused on factory audits, charity and one-way communication through sustainability reports. In recent years, however, human rights have become a key element in CSR and sustainability efforts globally, and we see a shift towards greater awareness and two-way communication through stakeholder engagement and partnerships to find solutions.

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) were adopted by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011. The UNGPs have now been integrated in key international standards for responsible business, including ISO 26000 and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Companies. The UNGPs are the authoritative reference point for Business and Human Rights, with broad global consensus including support from both businesses and governments.

Companies are expected to carry out human rights due diligence, and to “know and show” that they are respecting human rights. Corporate respect for human rights starts with a thorough understanding of corporate human rights impacts.

There are legal, financial and reputational risks and consequences for companies that fail to respect human rights. Conversely, respecting human rights can be good for business, by identifying risk to operations, attracting and maintaining committed employees, building investor trust, gaining access to new markets and customers by building good relationships with local communities and securing a social license to operate. We work with companies, government agencies, academic institutions and non-governmental organisations in the following areas:

  • Strategy and policy development
  • Project planning and project management
  • Human rights due diligence
  • Stakeholder dialogue and engagement
  • Public private partnerships – identification, due diligence, measurement
  • Training

HUMAN RIGHTS-BASED DEVELOPMENT

Since the 1990s, international organisations and development agencies have started to see the realisation of human rights as integral to development. Instead of viewing development only in terms of economic growth or human needs, sustainable development implies the realisation of a set of fundamental human right standards and principles. Human rights-based development integrates these standards and principles into the policies and processes of development. We work with development agencies, private foundations, international organisations and non-governmental organisations in the following areas:

  • Research reports and policy briefs
  • Project planning and project management (LFA, rights-based, results-based)
  • Capacity building and institutional development
  • Public private partnerships – identification, due diligence, measurement
  • Training
  • Monitoring & evaluations
